2022 FIFA World Cup stadium built from shipping containers

Construction of Stadium 974, formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, was completed ahead of the scheduled date for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar. The stadium is located in the city of Doha, Qatar and can accommodate up to 40,000 spectators.

The arena is made up of 974 shipping containers and modular construction steel, earning it the name "Stadium 974". The stadium is completely collapsible and can be dismantled and reassembled in a new location or transformed into several smaller venues.

The shape and the spaces between the seats allow natural ventilation and artificial cooling. Additionally, the stadium's proximity to the Arabian Gulf provides a natural cool breeze to ease the load on the stadium's cooling systems.

Designed by Fenwrick Iribarren Architects, Stadium 974 features a modular design, reducing construction costs, time and material waste. In addition, water usage will be reduced by 40% compared to the construction of a conventional stadium thanks to the efficient methods introduced in the project.

The containers that make up the exterior also serve as spaces to hold stairs, concessions, and restrooms. The containers also delivered other building materials to the site.

The stadium design has received five-star certification from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), which rates green buildings and infrastructure in the Middle East and North Africa.

The cost of the World Cup in Qatar is estimated at around $222 billion. The country has received backlash from several human rights groups for many reasons, including its dangerous working conditions. A recent Guardian report said 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar since the country won the bid to host the World Cup in 2010.

The report was refuted by the Qatar Labor Ministry.  On the other hand, the country has implemented new policies to reform its labor structure.
