Now using painters tape, tape around the wood above and below the mark. This will help, mostly, so that the wood doesn't split.
Now using the spade bit, make a hole in the wood on the mark.
Next, add the wood dowels, on the bottom, connecting two of the 1x2s.
Then add the dowels on the top side of the 1x2s, having them overlap. So the bottom dowels only have 2 1x2s on them, and the top will have 4...creating a triangle.
Now lay out the drop clothe, and place the opened frame on top of it. Cut it out with an extra 4 inches on top and bottom, and 2 inches on the sides. This will be for hemming.
Now, hem the long sides, and then hem the shorter sides wide enough for the dowels to fit through.
Place the dowels through the hem on both bottoms.
I didn't add a pocket for the dowel on top, the fabric just sits perfectly over the dowel.
I then painted all the wood white using an enamel paint. I also added some fun ribbon that I found at Hobby Lobby, and a light from DecorSteals. This light is battery operated...so it's perfect!
I love how all of this came together, and the best thing is, is that they can fold up and be stored pretty easily...like under the bed :)

DIY Drop Cloth Play Tent -Indoor or Outdoor!
Wow! How has this summer flown by so fast?! I made these tents back in May for my kids...we have had countless sleepovers in them and fun nights sitting under the stars. I picked up all these items from Home Depot back in the day when it took like 3 hours in line to finally get in. Luckily, the pick up service was quick! Now, at least here, that's not the case. It's pretty easy to get in :) Thank goodness!
The supply list to make these is super simple:
4 pieces of 1x2 @ 4'
3 pieces of 3/4" wood dowels @ 4'
Large drop clothe
3/4" wood spade bit and drill
Embellishments
The first step is to mark the top and bottom of each 1x2 about 2" in from the end on both ends.
We take them outside all the time too. In fact, for about a whole month, these were left outside in the wind and rain and sprinklers...this was all before I took these pictures. Can't tell, can you? They held up great!
Initially, I had bought the light not having any clue what to do with it. I just liked the look. I couldn't find a good place to hang it in my house. Then, that light bulb moment hit :) #punintended. Now I just need to get another one for the other tent! I do family photography as a little hobby and can't wait to use this as one of the props! I'm imagining lots of books and pillows and blankets. It should be fun!
How's your summer been? If you are like me, it's been creating a lot of our own fun and memories! Lots and lots of camping trips and outdoor things. In times like this, it is good to remember the beauty that is around us, and the good and beauty that family brings.
I've made some tents and tee-pees in the past, here are a few more tutorial links:
